Your Lawyer is Not Your Friend

Lawyers should have a good relationship with their clients. A respectful, friendly, collaborative relationship with open lines of communication. We sometimes need to talk to clients about emotional and deeply personal issues in their lives. Most of us try to be empathetic and compassionate with our clients going through such a difficult time.

Most family law lawyers in Brandon and area charge between $200 - $400 per hour. For that reason, both the lawyer and the client have to use time wisely. Those are expensive minutes.

The worst use of billable time happens when the client starts confusing their lawyer with a friend. A friend to whom they rant about their ex, describe all the bad behaviour in the marriage, discuss petty conflicts and complain about the legal system. Sometimes, these same rants, stories and complaints will be repeated several times.

Most lawyers try to be good listeners, and understand how emotional a separation or custody fight can be. Also, it can take some time at the start of the case before clients understand what's relevant legally and what isn't. But as the legal bills mount, clients need to pause before picking up the phone. Am I calling to give instructions to the lawyer, ask a question about my file or to ask a legal question? If the answer is no, may

be call a friend instead.
