What If I Don't Want To Pay For My Kid's University Education?

A recent court case from Winnipeg is illustrative with respect to paying child support for a child in university.
In that case, the father argued that he should not have to pay child support to his adult child in university because when the parents were together, they did not pay for post-secondary studies for their elder child. So why now that they are separated should he have to pay for school? Secondly, he argued that his child no longer has a relationship with him, so he should not have to help him out financially.

Neither argument was successful in court.

One other interesting part of the case is how the Judge chose a child support figure. She had the mother show exactly how much the adult child was costing her each month, and ordered the father to pay a portion of that amount. It was less than the Child Support Guideline amount based upon the father's income.
