Start Saving for Post-Secondary Costs

Parents need to be aware that if they are separated or divorced, paying for post-secondary school may not be their choice. The Child Support Guidelines allow for child support orders to continue for an adult child while they are still in school and for costs to be shareable s.7 expenses. Therefore a Judge can order that one or both parents pay for tuition, books and the child's living expenses. If the child decides on a long course of study, or attends school out of Canada, this can get very expensive. Many factors are taken into account - the income of the parents, the reasonableness of the education plan and the expenses, money available to the child, living arrangements etc. But saving up money in an RESP

before the child graduates high school is a very good idea.
