Start Talking About Summer

In family law, it is not too early to start thinking about summer.

We may still have snow on the ground, but separated parents have to pull out their calendars and begin looking at their summer plans. Sometimes discussions and negotiations can take weeks while people discuss holidays with their employers, work out vacation plans with extended family and look at summer camps for the children. Before they know it, June will be here and the parents will not have an agreement on how they will share the children in July and August. They may be left with no choice but to get their lawyers involved, and the lawyers need time to negotiate. It is very difficult to get into court for a Judge to decide summer holidays as it is not considered "emergent".

Parental negotiations should start now. If no agreement is reached by mid May, the parents need to contact their lawyers at that time if there is to be any hope of getting a court ordered schedule in place when the children finish their school year.
